Most recently , he designed the costumes for Lionsgate’sBorderlands , which convey the popular video game dealership to life sentence . Daniel is also the costume designer for the upcomingVenom : The Last Dance . Borderlandscomes to theaters on August 9th , 2024 .
The Borderlands video game are famous for their engaging gameplay and aesthetic . However , the movie will improve one affair the video game lack .

Screen Rantspoke with Daniel Orlandi about the research that went into verify the costume were accurate to the beloved video game characters . He reveals what his big challenge on this project was , as well as a piece of advice thatRobert De Nirogave him during one of his first film that has stuck with him throughout his career .
Daniel Didn’t Play The Games, But He Did Lots Of Research
Daniel Orlandi admit that he is not much of a gamer himself , never has been , but that did not stop him from taking this problem . He spend hours research , so that he could be certain to remain unfeigned to the look and tactile property of the Borderlands video games . Because of that , they had everything made , rather than buying it .
Daniel Orlandi : I ’m not a gamer . Never been a gamer . But I spend hour on YouTube watching masses fiddle the game , which was so much fun . And follow them , it was like , " Okay , we have to check that we have that . " We had to ensure we had what they were excited about . It was really edifying .
Movies Are A Big Collaboration
When talking about coming up with each of the costume designs , Daniel explains that it is a big collaborationism between himself , the production designers , and the player .
Daniel Orlandi : You seek to make [ the costumes ] as comfortable as potential , because the actors have to move so much in them . With Cate ’s costume , we were in Budapest and she was in London . We made the pants and the charge , and I ship them to her , and we did a Zoom together with her saying " Okay , yeah , these are all right . I can move . Oh , yeah , the boots . Can we just do something that ’s like this ? " So we image that out before she come to town , so she know that she could move in the costume because she has so much action .
Krieg is pretty faithful to the game costume . He ’s a primed guy , so it was fun to do and make out together . We had awe-inspiring leather workers in Budapest making that clobber for us . Moxie was the last one of the main characters . She was in New York , and we were in Budapest , so we had her measured in New York , and we start the costume together . There were a lot of adjustments made so she could move , and get the boots correct .

Here ’s the matter , it ’s trying to make this doer finger like the character from the game and not always an impersonation or exactly [ the same ] . They have to conquer the perfume of the reference from the game and the player . So a lot of films I ’ve done , it ’s like , do n’t do an impersonation of the result . So we ’ll inhabit the lineament and have the essence of the character reference .
I never want an actor to find uncomfortable . I need them to experience like the character . Sometimes too soon on , the director will say , " Well , I really want them this agency . " It ’s like , " Well , I can talk them into it in the fitting , but do you really want to babble out them into it every twenty-four hour period for six calendar month ? "
It ’s so funny because some movies I ’ve worked on , the player arrive in , and they are like , " You ’re the first person I ’m babble out to about this motion picture . " Or stimulate a Zoom call , or a call , let the cat out of the bag about the fictitious character , sending them stuff , ship them the excogitation . I bed working with actors . The collaborative nature of cinema is so cracking . I work with the output designer , cinematographer , Director , actors , prop , getting that all together . It ’s such a collaborative industriousness .

I love to have other conversations with the production designer and the props about what are the guns belong to await like ? And do we have to make something to hold them ? The Nut and bolts , as well as the design . You ca n’t just be in your little ivory tower and say , " This is the costume . I do n’t wish where they put the tonality . "
Biggest Challenge Costuming For Borderlands Is Making It True To The Game
When discussing the prominent challenge in make the costume for Borderlands , Daniel says it was making them lawful to everything - the secret plan , the script , and the actors .
Daniel Orlandi : Well , that ’s the thing . Making it seem true to the game , but also micturate it dependable to the playscript , and true to the actors that they ’ve cast . Some things are pretty close to the game and then some affair are not so tight . Cate ’s character is more of a badass and tougher , and we really require to show that with the chainmail . We wanted to make her seem like the case from the movie with the color and anatomy of the character in the game .
There Were Not Many Duplicates Of The Borderlands Costumes
Often , when working on movies with a lot of action , there are several versions of the costumes . Daniel admits that another one of the challenges with Borderlands is that they did not have many duplicates .
Daniel Orlandi : We did n’t have that many , to be honest . I ’ve had a lot more on other motion picture . Timewise , and we were shooting during the pandemic in Budapest . So the provision chain was like , " Yeah , we have enough material to make three . And that ’s all you got . " It ’s a destiny of tot up pressure , but that ’s the nature of our line . The pressure is fun .
Daniel reveals that something Robert De Niro said when working on one of his first films has stuck with him , and help him , throughout his whole career so far .

Daniel Orlandi : What I love about working in film is it ’s always unlike . It ’s a dissimilar world you go into , and it could be doing something that ’s historical , or a tangible character . I approach them the same way , make the worker find like the persona . And it could be one little matter . I learned early on . One of my first flick was with Robert De Niro and he taught me that every detail of his costume is important . In the morn , his costume would be in his lagger , and he would watch that these were the air sock we chose .
That helped me all through my life history . I jazz to give one little matter to an player that makes them palpate like the character reference , even if the audience does n’t see it . I did a film and there were two characters . There was a father in the flashbacks , and then the character grown - up , and I gave the Padre ’s ring to the grown - up type . Nobody point out in the movie , but they had the connection because they did n’t really have any scenes together .
Venom: The Last Dance Is “Going To Surprise Everybody”
Daniel aver that he can not tease much about the coming filmVenom : The Last Dance , but he can say that it is sound to surprise everybody .
Daniel Orlandi : I ca n’t tantalize anything except it was super sport . It ’s go to surprise everybody . The trailer is great . I have n’t seen [ Venom : The Last Dance ] yet .
