Screen Rant : What originally drew you to require to solve onBorderlands ?

Andrew Menzies : I ’m always emotional to essay something I have n’t done before and Borderlands really ticked that boxwood . I choose projects for what I think can dispute me and what I can bring to the table , creatively . I have to be excited by the task and feel I can give . And , this is how I felt when I translate the script to Borderlands and saw the visuals of the game .

Always looking for breathing in and Easter eggs .

Screen Rant : What were the liberal inspirations you study from the world of the Borderlands picture games ?

“There Are Lots Of Easter Eggs!” For Fans To Point Out

Screen Rant : Was there something you knew you had to admit in the sets ?

Andrew Menzies : It was really making certain we maintained the right tone in our lot that reverberate the tone in the biz . This was very important to Eli and the other key film makers . I was aware that our set could influence the histrion ’s carrying into action so it was of import to get our mood and tone just mightily with the colorfulness and humor but keeping that sense of dystopian doomsday looming in the background .

Screen blah : It seems like there are a stack of Easter Eggs in this moving-picture show . Is there anything placed on a readiness in the backcloth that fans may not catch ?

Andrew Menzies : Yes , there ’s a lot of Easter egg . In fact , we had someone in our section work out for several week digging abstruse for Easter eggs , going through Borderland Forums , reaching out to the game makers , playing the game , searching for these bollock and working out ways to get them in our film . Most of them are in the graphic layering but also in the dressing of set , especially in Sanctuary City and Tannis ’s home . One has to pay close attention to the signs and paperwork particularly to see them , but I ’ll leave it to the fans to attain !

Krom’s Canyon Was The Biggest Challenge

Screen Rant : What was your biggest challenge onBorderlands ?

Andrew Menzies : For me , the biggest challenge was working through the ideas for Krom ’s Canyon , the bighearted solidifying patch for the third act . Not only was it a challenge coming up with the construct with my team but make through the complexity of how it works for the activity . It had to be original and provide a playground for the action . It was a challenge for almost every section as the construct was decide on late in production and then getting the action worked out and rig progress in fourth dimension was a challenge . as luck would have it it had two world grade art directors on it , Zsuzsi Kismarty and Karl Probert who managed it to fruition . And , the last layers were add up by an Oscar win decorator , Zsuzsanna Sipos .

I ’m excited to see how it plays out in the moving-picture show . On that note , I just wanted to say , this was an unusual picture show for me and my crew to work on and all mistreat up out of their comfort zone to return this unusual task . I was very lucky to have an splendid crowd to work through all the layering on these sets . More than any other project I ’ve work on , these Seth had many layers and they all had to be true to the game . I ’ve not watched the film but in the trailer I can see all the additional layers added by many creative crowd members on set and in post and I ’m really excited to see how it all comes together in the movie .

Andrew Menzies Was Most Excited To World Build

Screen Rant : What were you most worked up to make when plan Borderlands ?

Andrew Menzies : I think it ’s always exciting to world work up , even when the world is laid out in the biz . But , there ’s still take exception bring that world into a hot action film for a budget and to dish up all the storytelling needs . However , the circle I most enjoy doing was Tannis ’s house as it was one of the last Set we did and it was very much a collaborative effort with all my bunch , from the PA ’s to the art directors figure out on the solidifying create it all it can be . Also , it was a pleasance see to it how Jamie Lee Curtis , recreate Tannis , loved the exercise set . She take the time to write a page recollective letter to the art department , thanking us for how the curing exalt her and how she appreciate our efforts arrange her do together . It will be a letter I will treasure .

Andrew’s Art Background Helped Him Hone His Craft

Screen Rant : How has your art screen background help you in the part of product architect ?

Andrew Menzies : For me , it ’s been important to find out my craft from the earth up . I ’ve always been a somebody that gets my self-confidence from experience and knowledge and I would n’t have had the bluster to miss any of the steps . I did many year as a set couturier , then to adjunct art director , on to art directing to designing . I even bend down several design offers , when I was an fine art theater director as I mat I was n’t ready . There is a lot to know to design sets from construction methods , to paint techniques , to history , and how to make sets work for filming . It ’s never ending and the more experience you have the better you ’ll be at your guile .

Also , I was so very lucky to have excellent wise man , such as Patrizia von Brandenstein and Rick Carter . The fine art department , more than any other department , has to have a good agreement of almost all other section , like direction , camera , stunts , lighting , optic FX , peculiar FX and audio , etc . as we are thinking about the set sometimes months before anyone else is so we have to make certain their requirement are build into the set innovation . That knowledge comes from eld of pick up . As the industriousness evolves and every project has different challenges you never stop teach .
