Summary
Currently useable to see in theaters , Skincareis a new thriller directed by Austin Peters that explores how far a person will go to protect their image . The photographic film stars Elizabeth Banks as Hope Goldman , an aesthetician taking the next tone in her life history by launching her own skincare origin . WhenLuis Gerardo Méndez’scharacter , Angel Vergara , open up a competing dress shop across the street , Hope believe he may be responsible for tarnishing her repute .
Prior toSkincare , Méndez is known for starring and executive producing Netflix ’s first Spanish - language original comedy series , Club de Cuervos . He work with bank on the 2019 picture show , Charlie ’s Angels , and reckon forrader to reunify with his former film director . Méndez trust that , overall , Skincareis a story about mental health , and hop it will speak to those finding their footing in the ever - evolvingcity of Los Angeles .
The 2019 Charlie ’s Angels has been free for rent and purchase . Here are some behind - the - scene facts that have also now been free .

Screen Rantchats with Méndez about what drew him toSkincare , filming under metre constraints , and what he hop audiences will take away from the movie .
Méndez Believes That Skincare Is About Balancing A Person’s Ambitions With Their Mental Health
“If you just care about your ambitions and that desire of projecting something, it never ends well.”
Screen Rant : To get going off , I would screw to know what drew you toSkincareand made you need to get involved in the film .
Luis Gerardo Méndez : The script was really serious . It was broadly speaking inspired by reliable consequence . That ’s always enchanting as an actor , and the possibility to work again with Elizabeth Banks . She was mydirector in Charlie ’s Angels , and we became good champion there . The possibility of being this other military unit against her was fun .
jumpstart off of that , your character is Hope ’s business competitor , and they do n’t get off on the good groundwork . What is Angel ’s first impression of Hope when she walks into his shop ?

Luis Gerardo Méndez : The manner I go out this movie , and the mode I see Hope and this relationship — I cogitate it ’s a love varsity letter to Los Angeles . It ’s like a love alphabetic character to this metropolis , and at the same time , it point out all these things that we struggle with — the people who live here . " You necessitate to stay on relevant . You need to be more successful . You need to be more this or more that . "
I feel it ’s a movie about genial health . How do you produce a nice remainder between your genial health and your aspiration ? Because if you just care about your ambitions and that desire of projecting something , it never ends well . I think that was the affair I was trying to present with this rubbing with Elizabeth ’s character .
Do you think Angel has some level of esteem for this woman who is working in the same industry ?

Luis Gerardo Méndez : I do n’t know . He probably did n’t even make love about her . That ’s what make the encounter even more annihilating . They have this line where he ’s like , " I do n’t cogitate we have the same customer . " They do n’t like each other from the starting time . I think the most interesting affair is that this guy has this new applied science . It ’s just something fictitious that the director create to say there ’s always going to be something unexampled . There ’s always going to be something new that you do n’t have it off , that is going to feel like a threat .
I find like right now we ’re starting to interact with AI , for example , or ChatGPT and all these things . It ’s really easy to be like , " Oh yeah , I feel for Hope , because she ’s just trying to sell her lotions and stuff , and all of a sudden , there ’s this bozo with this technology that you do n’t even interpret . " I feel a small bit like Hope in the movie business organisation right now . This technology is coming , and now they ’re going to be capable to do movies without actors . How is that locomote to forge ? It ’s really easy to relate to feel like you ’re staying behind the wave . I think that was something else interesting about the script .
Méndez Believes That Angel’s Backstory Was An Important Part Of Skincare’s Message
“He is the most successful character in the movie, but when we see him in his intimacy, in his house, you can feel that he’s not enough for himself.”
We do n’t recognize a lot about your lineament before Hope meet him , so I ’m curious if you came up with a more in - deepness backstory about how he induce into the skin care business enterprise .
Luis Gerardo Méndez : For me , that was the most important part of this character . We have this setting where we see Angel singing in his house and having his own karaoke company . That was very of import for the director , and for me , because we ’re seek to show the cracks in all these character . You could consider that he ’s the one who is successful . He should be happy . He has the best technology . He is the most successful character in the movie .
But when we see him in his intimacy , in his house , you could feel that he ’s not enough for himself . He wants something else . He used to be a social dancer , or he used to be a singer , and now he works in the skin care industry because he run out in the other industry . So again , it ’s very specific about this city , and I think that backstory was also very important to say the things we wanted to say .

As you were tell earlier , image is plainly a huge melodic theme in this film . I would sleep together your take on howSkincareaddresses our relationship with range of a function and the image of winner .
Luis Gerardo Méndez : It ’s a huge paper , and it ’s something that takes a lot of attention in my life-time , talking about genial health . It ’s tricky to navigate through the requirements of the industry and the public we ’re subsist in and create a practiced balance between your ambitions and your mental health . I think that ’s the most interesting thing that I can take from the picture . There ’s nothing wrong with want more , and want to be successful , and to want this or that .
But what are you willing to do to get that ? That ’s the tricky part . Are you willing to ruin someone ’s life to get what you want ? Are you unforced to destroy your own genial health to get what you want ? If you have a go at it that something is not good for you , are you move to keep doing it because you think that ’s going to get you to the place you require to be ? I think all those enquiry are in the movie , in a way .

I read in the director ’s note that you shot this in 18 days .
Luis Gerardo Méndez : I do n’t remember if it was 18 or 20 or 25 , but it was crazy . It was fast . That ’s what happens with indie flick . You get a lot of originative freedom , but you do n’t have a circle of time , so you want to run . I got the script two eld before we shot the movie . It ’s usually like that . I had a luck of conversations with Austin Peters , the director , and with Elizabeth , and then one mean solar day they ’re like , " We got the money . We ’re gon na start germinate in three month , " and you ’re like , " Oh , coolheaded . " I knew about this undertaking like three year before . You never fuck when these movies are going to get made .
Now that this film is about to premier , what ’s next for you ? Do you have anything else in the pipeline ?

Luis Gerardo Méndez : Yes . I directed my first movie last year . It ’s called Technoboys , and it ’s with Netflix , and it ’s coming out presently . I can not say the day yet , but soon . It ’s about a boy isthmus . It ’s a mad clowning . I think you ’re gon na like it .
