Screen Rant : I wanted to pop off by asking about that door scene twenty minutes in . Shana Feste : Well , I think , for me , it was all about what you do n’t show , right ? And as a survivor myself , was I locomote to shoot a Brassica napus picture ? It did n’t feel bona fide to me . That ’s not something that I needed to aim or see . And I really want Pilou to hold in the camera because that ’s how powerful he is . He was blend to dictate what we view in this moving picture and there were thing that he did n’t require us to see because that ’s where he was going to be his true self . When the camera was away from him , he could be his true evil self . And so when I was thinking of this variety of supervillain , I thought , " How terrific if he even controls what we can see in this film ? " Like so many potent men do . What pass behind unopen doors is often where they are their unfeigned ego .
I was croak to necessitate you about that as well because there are a few instances when we see him hold the tv camera , but at the end of the film , we see her take the camera into her own hands . I ’m sure there were a few , but what was the principal message behind that for both of you ?
Shana Feste : For me , it was all about the lens in which we were see the pic . He was trying to narrate his write up . He was stress to curb the narration . And at the end , I really wanted it to be Cherie ’s story . And that ’s why she reclaims the camera . It ’s her narrative that we ’re genuinely following and it ’s her terminate that she take in . What I really roll in the hay about it is that this is n’t something that ’s whole imaginary and made up . What I bonk about it is that it was really based on what is really happening now , and we ’re being able to partake that in a literary genre cinema . But even just talking about how a heap of Indigenous woman are being — we do n’t screw what ’s actually happening when they disappear . But the narrative is like … there really is n’t one because they do n’t really want us to be able-bodied to look at that closely . So who ’s holding the tale I think is really important . And that ’s one affair I really reply to when I was becoming a part of the motion-picture show .
Shana Feste : That ’s what I had in mind . Exactly .
Parts of it are supernatural , but there was a lot of realness to this . After she ’s abused , she ’s immediately arrested for public inebriation . Was that all part of it as well ? Did you want to get this substance out there and say that story ?
Shana Feste : Yeah , I mean , I think there ’s a universal mistrust of adult female and their verity . Even in that scene , after she is test to get anybody to assist , which was base on a real - lifetime experience for me after I was assaulted . It was six phase modulation in Los Angeles , and I ran blocks tap for help and no one helped me until I finally had to go to a high shoal that was in session for Nox school and write what happened to me on the chalkboard .
