braggy Yearstars Black , Martin , and Wilson as three men in difficult stages of their life : Black is unemployed and has small ambition , Wilson is suffer from a mid - life crisis , and Martin is struggling to figure out how to spend his remain years , since he is now draw back . All three men eventually decide to leave their even lives behind them for one year and spend that time move across the land , doing what they ’ve always loved - bird observance .

While theBig Yearsupporting cast include remarkable starlet like Rashida Jones ( Parks and Recreation ) , Rosamund Pike ( Pride and Prejudice ) - along with Oscar - winner Anjelica Huston ( The Royal Tenenbaums)and Dianne West ( Bullets Over Broadway ) - this is clear mordant , Martin , and Wilson ’s show . Frankel is aiming to strike a equaliser between broad comedy and dear sentiment , like he did in celluloid such asMarley & MeandThe Devil Wears Prada . Does he look to have done a good job of that ?
It ’s kind of strong to say , based on theBig Yearfootage shown so far . Some of the forcible comedy bits ( like Black ’s pratfalls ) and glimpse of meaningful conversations between the theatrical role follow off less as genuinely hilarious and touching and more like the sort of over - the - top picture you ’d expect to see in a generic situation comedy . Heck , the bit where Black wishes that a snowstorm wo n’t happen - keep abreast immediately by ( guess what ) a snow storm - almost find like it should have a laugh racetrack follow it .
Best to not dismissBig Yearjust yet , though . You might remember that the dawdler for Frankel ’s adaption ofMarley & Melikewise teased a moving picture full of wacky clowning antics - and yet the last product was much more serious in smell that we ’d all been led to conceive . So perhapsThe large Yearwill tender a better mix of laughs and drama than this drone indicates .
