During this time , she tries to provide both the necessary financial and emotional support to her family unit . Still , she often strains under a societal organisation that fails to offer up any form of tending . Rossum ’s thoughtful portrait of her character systematically garner praise from both viewers and critics , who fully appreciated her power to lean into the role . However , Rossum eventually left the show after nine seasonsto go after other acting endeavors . Despite her exit , the series go on for two more installment before ending this week .

While speaking toTHR , showrunner John Wells explain why Rossum was absent from the series stopping point . Citing logistic issues due to the COVID-19 pandemic , Wells reveal how and why the final storyline finally had to change :
“ It was pretty much the same with the exception : We were trying to get Emmy — and Emmy wanted to come back . We caught it at the faulty moment . We need her to return and had some storylines about her get along back and she want to do it . Based on what was going on with the pandemic , when we were planning it — there have been so many upsurge , I ca n’t remember which one it was — but the quarantine went back into effect between New York [ where Rossum lodge in ] and Los Angeles [ whereShamelessfilms ] and it was inconceivable to figure out how to get her back . That was grown letdown : not being able to make that work out because we all wanted it to happen . A very underage but sad answer of everything that ’s happened in the pandemic . ”
Although Rossum was unable to return , the rest of the dramatis personae issued a parting to theirbeleaguered , complicated characters . As has been par for the course with the Gallaghers in the finale , a glad ending continue more or less subtle . At the same time , promise was a recurring theme for Fiona ’s crony and young baby , with most of them looking outwards to the time to come with a familiar resiliency .
Unfortunately , Rossum could not fall back for a final homecoming . Still , it persist comfort to lie with that her role earlier leftto survive a new independent , well - rounded biography . ThroughoutShameless , Fiona often had to confront her demon , impel her to regrow and assess her development over and over again .
